Christo Volschenk, a long-time freelance writer and editor who worked for the AIM Group for more than 10 years, passed away at his home in Great Karoo, South Africa. He was 69 years old.
His sister, Maret Cronje, advised us of his death.
Christo spent more than 16 years working for Naspers, from 1986 until 2002. He was deputy editor and economics of business publications owned by Media24, a Naspers subsidiary, and later developed and edited Moneymax, a Naspers platform with stock exchange news and data. He also reported from the South African Parliament in 1994-1997 in “the years after [the] birth of the new South Africa,” as his personal website put it.
He reported on World Bank / IMF annual meetings in Washington and Hong Kong.
While in Stuttgart, Christo worked as a freelancer for a number of companies and publications, primarily the AIM Group. He started with us as a writer and researcher in 2007; became editor for EMEA in 2011, and became managing editor from 2016 until 2018, when he left to freelance for other publications.
He rejoined the AIM Group in May 2022 from South Africa as web editor.
His website described him as “Good eye for detail … enjoys editing … forever flexible,” and said (somewhat outdated-ly), “Twenty-six years behind the keyboard … and still enjoying every day.”
His freelance clients included the Deutsche Boerse in Frankfurt; Germany Trade & Invest in Berlin; Deutsche Telekom AG in Bonn; Softscience, Stuttgart; Netlog in Belgium, and the Statistical Bureau in Stuttgart.
He also served as a translator, including English, German and Afrikaans.
Christo was a graduate of Stellenbosch University with a BCom in law and economics, and a post-graduate law qualification. He also received a certificate for wine appreciation from the Wine Academy in Stellenbosch in 2001.
He started his career as a cigarette sales representative in Johannesburg in 1977, and later worked for Rightford-Searle-Tripp & Makin, an advertising agency in South Africa. In 1981, he took a year to travel to the United States, spending six months coaching tennis and six months traveling around the country.
